buckman coe

Buckman Coe creates soul folk music with a vibe somewhere between Neil Young and Bob Marley. His songs are diverse and varied, sonically bringing to mind artists such as Jeff Buckley, Paul Simon, and Ben Harper. This tapestry of influences and his beautiful atypical melodies and earnest lyrics, makes his music deep and oceanic. His craft is a reflection of his own diverse cultural background and years of experience in the social, economic, and mental health fields. This has given him a willingness to explore the emotions and stories that make us, and always in a way that is ultimately joyful and full of hope. He is a believer in the power of music to change us as individuals and as a people.

In October of 2009 he began recording "Latest Waking" after a couple years being back in Vancouver. Half of the songs were drawn from a large catalogue written while in Colorado studying ecopsychology and counselling, and singing in a funk jam band. The other half of the songs came from his time back in Canada working as a yogi, mentor, and playing weekly gigs with world fusion band Red Light Monastery. When several members of that band left for far-reaching parts of the globe, he refocused on his solo career with renewed inspiration.

"Latest Waking" was recorded mostly in his apartment and in the houses of friends, and is testimony to the beauty of doing-it-yourself with what's available and with the help of one's community. The songs reflect his intimate solo performances, as well as the more high-tempo full-band pieces, and features some of his favourite local Vancouver solo artists - Max Serpentini, Steph MacPherson, and Marnie Mains. It is this album that he is touring with this summer in BC and Alberta, as well as at various festivals in Canada and the US.

There is a groove to his music that can get rocking and even in the more mellow or somber moments there is always an enlivening pulse. He often sings about the perils and pleasures of love, and about surviving or adverting the destruction of our planet and each other. There's a Zen undercurrent of bettering our world and ourselves and the honesty of his lyrics makes the songs deeply resonate deeply. This is especially apparent in Buckman's live performances which he delivers with much positive energy and playfulness. He is both bard & jester, uplifting us with story and song, and urging us to seek truth and beauty.
